December 25 is when - following the Solstice - days become longer. Sol Invictus therefore easily became an allegory for the arrival of the Light of this world and early Christians adopted this as as good as any other day to commemorate Jesus’s birth.
But the true arrival of the Sun does not occur until perehilion, in early January, when the Sun is at its closest point to the earth. This is when Epiphany is celebrated, traditionally when the wise men visited (welcomed) the Son.
