I do the things I described to create segregation between my systems and enable portability at the end of the compute life-cycle... eventually that system will get replaced, but if you virtualize the servers, then it becomes a relatively simple matter to backup/move around the storage.... I haven't rebuilt my mail server in 4 or 5 years, but I've changed the hardware for it at least 3x.
plex and torrentserver are less complicated than mail.
