there are two reason why this it not the preferred solution from our side. This is only temporarily necessary. Merging the driver / uapi takes longer than anticipated/wished but eventually it will be merged.
The DRM linux maintainers are uneasy about the use of unstable DRM uapi in the wider eco system. That’s the reason why the driver in upstream mesa is intentionally broken. A local package in distributions which already ship the driver in the base system is a much smaller footprint.
