used it in a previous job as a dev env. Basically a "bigger" venv. You take your $HOME with you, so not much difference to develop on the CLI. Only problem I had on the CLI was compiled tools in my home bin against newer libc than the one in the toolbox env. Ie. use musl for cargo and stuff like that.

Seeing up pycharm was a painfull, but vscode should be nice with the remote interpreter support.

Maybe also look into devcontainer setups, that seems to become even more a standard?
