I hitchhiked to Astoria Oregon on a whim when I was about 22. I had stopped through Portland to see my grandparents and for whatever reason, felt some sort of attraction to the Astoria area.
It took a few hours, but I made it to town around 2pm. I had no plan, so I stopped at a bar under the bridge (Astoria has a bridge that goes over the Columbia Gorge into Washington).
Anyway. The place was full at 2pm, which I found odd.
I was immediately called to the bar by a guy who went by the name Rick the Roofer.
The conversation was brief and went something like this:
'You looking for work?' He asked.
'Yeah'
'You need a place to stay'
'Yeah'
'Finish your beer. Let's go'
Long story short, I spent the summer tearing shingles off of multi-story buildings that overlooked the mosy amazing estuary I've ever seen.
To Rick - cheers bro. Great memories. 🍻
