I learned this practice from Mary Stewart van Leunen’s wonderful Handbook for Scholars, which I devoured (along with the idiosyncratic manuscript “Mathematical Writing” by Knuth, Larrabee and Roberts) while doing my PhD many moons ago, and I’ve tried to keep to it, ever since.
