I carefully stuck my hand in there, felt some very soft dawn fur, and there’s a cavity.
The #cottontail chooses my herb bed to nest because it’s elevated and it stays dry even when there’s a flood. The chive and marjoram mask any baby bunny scent. And when they’re born, they can hide in the herb bush. It’s the best location. I’d choose this site too if I were a cottontail mom. Last year, even a robin made a nest (I don’t know if they used it, I just found it).
