The opposite of encrypted communication invokes the panopticon effect. You change your communication if you believe someone is observing it.

Of course you lose the feeling of intimacy in an encrypted chat group with many people (and you should, having the feeling of "this is encrypted messenger, I am not being watched" is dangerous), or if you don't trust the other person.

But if you do and you don't trust the communicator, you're not yourself. You are playing a show for an adversarial audience.

These days, strong encryption is absolutely necessary for healthy human relationships. Yes, we prefer in person, but the world no longer works like that. If you travel away from your loved ones, you want to still be intimate with them and keep in touch. You don't want to present them with the version playing for the panopticon, you want to stay you.
