I almost never got breakfast before school, in part because school started so f-ing ridiculously early there just wasn't time for it. I think my high school day started at something stupid like 7:20 AM, and then teachers would often complain about students falling asleep during class and give out detention for those who did.
So many attitudes around education need to change. School should be a place for kids to go so they can learn things. That's where the focus should be: learning things. Not punishing kids for having the audacity to be kids and an inconvenience for the people running the school who want to treat it like it's a daytime prison.
I have zero doubt that if we had started later in the day and didn't try to make kids run on an empty stomach, we would ALL have done better, but ESPECIALLY the kids who might not have gotten three square meals a day otherwise.
