I think the best way to do it is to hand it lightly with humor. I would usually make jokes depending on the context and relationship like "Still lost in the woods?" if they recently went hiking, "Did you you drown? 😉" if they were by water. "Thinking really hard, I see." if they're someone I can tease more. "So, did you die? You need CPR?" if I already let them know I'm expecting a reply. It works well.
