My opinion- doing the pattern while also shaping the thumb gusset etc is going to mess you up unless you are brave or experienced. I think the sleeve is very cool and interesting, but you don't need that in the hand part as well. I think leave it as a cool feature of the wrist, and just do the normal hand. I actually think it will look cooler that way- like a medieval gauntlet!
