I think the concept is simple and generic enough so that it is useful to adopt in other projects too. To make things easy for shell folks we provide a tool `systemd-vpick` that exposes the logic as a simple shell command: you specify a .v dir, and it outputs the newest version to pick. It's a bit more complicated than that IRL, since you need to specify prefix/suffix to match, but essentially it's just this.
