At the end of the book you see that the alien who warned Ye not to reply was still around, by design, so the droplet was part of HIS punishment. As far as the Trisolarians went, they didn't care if the humans were in despair or not. Our fleet posed not the slightest threat to them, despite their overweening confidence (the ships were faster). That, of course, set up the MAD situation that ended the book.
