The fact that US people residing in Mexico usually refer to themselves as "expats" and never as "migrants" bothers me.
At the same time, people immigrate for many different reasons, and are treated very differently by immigration systems depending on their wealth and the relative powers of their old and new countries.
So it's not crazy to have different words that convey the range of different experiences people have moving from one country to another.
