There are cars that burn oil today, but nothing like the rate cars used to, and often semi-by-design, like the BMW "hot v" V-8, which trades reduced turbo lag for durability. It's panned for burning oil and only being good for something like 100k-200k miles, but that's still better than the median car from the 70s/80s despite a deliberately unreliable design
