People really go the wrong route when trying to downplay Japan. For instance I would rather live where this picture depicts than many places in America or even in the world. The people are polite, neat, the streets are clean, people obey the rules, the infrastructure is functional and dependable, and people tend not to fuck with each other. Where people should concentrate are things like the terrible work culture and endless regulation. Pay is low, prices are high, and you are expected to work long hours for your pittance. Homes are actually a depreciating asset. Your entire life is crammed into small spaces. Even owning a car becomes prohibitive after a few years. On top of everything they don't like you. Sure they may tolerate your presence, especially if you are giving them tourist money, but when that runs out you can fuck off. Even if you do manage to get a job there, beyond English teacher, it would require you to have such an in demand skill you might as well stay where you are because you'll more money.
