Sparked a debate between PABLOF7z (nprofile…wkgf) and fiatjaf (nprofile…nk43) today. #goals
I can definitely see the benefit of both approaches.
What I proposed was a video client that does something similar to fountain_app (nprofile…f02q) by displaying only notes that have videos attached to them in a feed, and having the ability to apply web-of-trust filters to it, so that it could be just videos posted by people within your WoT, or that people within your WoT have reacted to or reposted, such that each user's "trending."
The debate is about whether this approach or having a separate kind dedicated to posting videos would be preferable. I can see both having their benefits.
Considering what most users would expect from videos within a video client, they would be displayed with a title, a description, often a thumbnail image, various timestamps to specific sections of the video, and possibly include a file for subtitles. Not many users sharing video links in kind 1 notes include any of these, since they are often sharing videos they did not create, and kind 1 doesn't require anything like that when creating a note with a video link.
NIP-71 defines all of the above for posting videos as a separate kinds, specifically a kind 34235 for landscape orientation and 34236 for portrait orientation.
However, I still see the value of being able to have a feed of just videos linked in kind 1 notes and filtered to your WoT. This is something that could be done in a kind 1 client via a custom feed in the feed marketplace, such as #Amethyst or #Primal, but it would also make sense to have a video-specific client that has both types of feeds. One for landscape videos posted as kind 34235, one for portrait orientation videos posted as kind 34236, and one for video links shared in kind 1 notes by your WoT.
What say you, #Nostr?
