Because you want to be able to connect to just that single (or more, of course) relay in order to get all your DMs.
Because you want to trust it to not leak the DMs you receive.
Even if you don't care about any of that does it hurt to publish a new event with your same "read" relays in a list? It serves as a good signal that you're ready to receive NIP-17 DMs instead of NIP-04.
