Humza Yousaf has admitted the SNP mishandled efforts to make it easier for people to legally switch gender, saying “it was clearly a mistake”. The former first minister of Scotland was among the foremost defenders of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, which would have allowed people to legally switch sex from the age of 16 by simply declaring they had lived in their acquired gender for six months. Yousaf, who is of Pakistani heritage, previously compared critics of self-identification to racists, insisting “they’ll come for me next” if they were not opposed. He also accused the UK government of “a power grab” when it ruled the bill was incompatible with the UK Equality Act. Yousaf has now admitted the implementation of the act was mishandled but insists its aims were well-intentioned.
