I think I've suddenly realised what's crashing the Podnews server when it resizes images. It's not anything to do with the image resize. It's the thing that comes next - the Amazon S3 upload. D'oh.
AND https://github.com/aws/aws-sdk-php/issues/2824 appears to be a bug report about it, and a different piece of upload code...
Well. Worth a look at that in a little bit.
