Sometimes I use the little wire flags like the city uses. The flag itself is plastic tho and only lasts maybe two years or so before starting to shred.
Popsicle sticks are a little short and easy to get lost in the duff. Bamboo is a good idea, anytime I can use it instead of wood I do, although it's not super easy to write on legibly.
