It explained why the victims seemingly burn while everything else not in contact with them in the room remained virtually unscathed. It wasn't rapid enough to ignite everything around the person but it was intense enough to reduce much or all of their body to ash.

(This is one of those things that has clearly stuck at the back of my mind without ever thinking or reading about it since. A bit like being shown how a magic trick is achieved.)
