You're not wrong. In the rainforest life grows steadily and almost alarmingly well. One ancient cedar or Douglas fir tree can be an ecosystem in itself. Coniferous trees that fall over tend to hold water in their cells, so they become nurse logs/stumps for salal, licorice fern and a gathering of other species.

We also have Garry oak savannah (Very little of it left), which tends to be drier, and other areas where there isn't enough soil to support roots.

Lichen species are curious beasts - a combination of a fungus and either an algae or a cyanobacteria. They grow on leaves, on bark, and some species grow on bare rock. Depending on species and growing conditions a lichen might grow 5mm a year or down to 0.1mm a year. Put that up against a 200-lb human wearing hiking boots and the lichen loses every time.
