Saw some folks talking about religious zealots calling the shots, so it’s time for me to reiterate this:
All it takes for a society to become intolerant is for the “moderate” majority to *not mind* what a tiny intolerant minority wants, i.e. “I don’t like it but it doesn’t affect me” or “I don’t want to look like the intolerant guy, so I’m secretly happy that the intolerant bunch is doing the dirty work of making the environment more favorable for me”.
