I'm not disagreeing with your point, either. It's just a different one from the one I'm making.
The point I'm making is not limited to men and women either. I see this "I identify with/as" all over the place, used where the proper terminology would be "I am" instead (which is essentially shorthand for "I observe X, therefore I am y").
And my point is that this identify/observe dichotomy is not central to the point YOU are making. Which IS central.
