While I was a college student, I was on a Yukio Mishima kick; I thought his writing was beautiful. Then I found out about his politics, and I freaked out for a few days. What did it say about me that I was reading books by a fascist and didn't recognize it?
The thing is, while I was being too hard on myself, I think it's a meaningful question. I don't think we can neatly separate the art from the artist or the reading from the intention.
