I still remember watching them press their hair every week. Or relaxing it. Or getting a Jheri Curl or weave. Or wearing a wig. My dad was Native/Irish and Black,and he had wavy hair. I used to straighten my hair with a flat iron and blow dryer instead of a relaxer. It would last 2 days in the beach weather in LA.
