One thing that strikes me is — many people who did great scholarly things years and years ago turn .... somehow weird dark and wicked and almost evil in their old age. Perhaps it is the deterioration of the mind, perhaps it is the loss of flexibility...
Butler seems to me one of those honest scholars who has kept a basic curiosity and openness over the years, without "turning weird" in the weirdest era of our lives. And it's nice to see.
