The general public is often scared, and any real activists, anyone with fire in their eyes and true equality on their mind (death before giving way) frightens them. (Some of the people offending you probably belong in that category, unhinged. Others that offend you are just offensive, no way to tell for sure)
And then there are the really couragous people. The peasenics letting the cops beat them to a pulp, going to prison for nothing but standing there saying "violence bad, plz do not".
Those are the ones that can change stuff, because they are less threatening than category #1 (good people) and anyone in power will go to them to negotiate.
Short of being all powerful, we need both to progress. And yeah, it's really hard to say which of the first category you encountered, as far as i know you i would bet on the "just asshole" thing, but i'm too much of an asshole myself to be sure ;-)
Just ignore the first category, if it's not your thing to be unhinged. The trolls swimming along there won't be any more powerful if you ignore them. And the "do it right now, with force if necessary" don't need us.
I see two good ideas: disengage or defend. Defend is only good if anyone pushes into a space you really need. Did anyone push into a personal space?
Small anecdote: i once followed a german anti-car activist and saw something like "kill all men". I was a bit miffed and asked "really?". The answer was yes, so i disengaged. Not my space.
