it's very silly to me that for performance and reliability one should:
- ignore hardware RAID and do it in software
- disable TCP hardware offloading and do it all in software
- disable hardware network packet checksumming and do it in software
because apparently while it can be faster it either isn't, is unreliable, or is subtly broken in such a way that it makes things slower
