Here's my new heuristic for determining which new tech doohicky is actually just a massive grift:
Are the companies making it sponsoring a #chess tournament? If the answer is affirmative, it's definitely a grift.
A couple years ago there were #crypto sponsored events everywhere. Today, I see there is currently an #AI cup going on. A couple more of these and it will be confirmed that AI is as much a con job as crypto.
