Farming wise, I did the Pit, Andariel and Lower Kurast (for runes), geared the Merc as best as I could (Tal Rashas face, Insight in a Colossus Voulge, and a Lionheart for survivability until Fortitude) and powered through.
And og Diablo: yes! Was probably too young to love it most, D II really hit me in those formative years I guess.
