You can overclock the RP. The wide cable, is that connected to a RPi? And if so, what is it's function? Debugging?
I do get the RP2040 choice. ESP32s are more costly and convoluted re editions. You may eventually need more cores to replace an FPU. Maybe there's a DMA enabled FPU put there?
But sticking with the RP you could enerverande design a cheap PCB contrasting trend of them :)
