NiMh surely is the safer solution, but more of a pain to charge.\nan alternative are LFP cells, where you can run most 3.3V things directly (read the data sheets, mostly they are fine up to 3.6V), but protection and charging circuits are harder to find and the cell size/formats might be too big.",
