Anna Jarvis invented Mother’s Day in 1908 and persuaded Congress to make it a federal holiday in 1914. But by 1920, it was so commercialized she called florists and greeting card sellers “charlatans, bandits, pirates, racketeers, kidnappers and termites” and spent the rest of her life trying to get it rescinded.
