The Master’s wife was seen castigating her own mother when the elder woman was bemoaning that the people were able to own weapons even when they were not called to the duke’s levy. The Master’s students were scandalized, and asked how this was right conduct (理).
The Master replied: “Those who use filial piety (孝) as a shield from criticism are often those who lack Wisdom (智). Always remember how Yang Yung criticized the great Zhuge Liang when he mismanaged the State, and that great minister wept for three days when his wise subordinate died. So all elders should remember that remonstrance, as well as obedience, dwell in balance when observing filial piety.”
