Fwiw, I had a bad time for years when using my isp-provided router. Wireless would drop constantly, traffic would randomly stop routing outside the network, etc.
Solution was a little htpc box with dual gigabit, running openbsd, that lives in front of my router (which now just handles dhcp and wifi). Speeds went up a very small amount. Reliability went to 100%. Wifi hasn't dropped in over a year. Realllly good results.
