This week's Linux and FOSS news:

LINUX NEWS

After 20 years of development, real time PREEMPT_RT support becomes part of the Linux kernel in the upcoming 6.12 release:

COSMIC Alpha 2 released with new settings, improved file manager (which now has an option to view and page through images inside the folder without using a separate image viewer) etc.:

LXQt 2.1 released with experimental Wayland session, supporting Hyprland, KWin, Labwc, Niri, River, Sway and Wayfire compositors; some UI improvements:

Canonical fixes a critical CUPS vulnerability in Ubuntu, which attackers can use to push a PPD (PostScript Printer Description) file to connected printer, when executing the next print command, malicious PPD also gets executed:

(Luckily I don't use any printer, I have CUPS connections blocked in Portmaster, but regardless, it can be exploited pretty easily, so it's a pretty big deal.)

KaOS 2024.09 released with KDE Plasma desktop, installer lets to choose between LibreOffice and Calligra, there's an option to install system with bcachefs, Zed code editor (Atom fork with some AI features) is preinstalled, packaging of Ladybird browser is planned (it's in pre-alpha but KaOS devs claim it can already be used for some simple browsing), new Phonon sound backend gets added along with a phonon-mpv package, GTK2 will be removed:

(Why preinstall Zed? Not everyone is a programmer, and even less Linux users want AI lol)

DXVK 2.4.1 released, providing more stable experience for NVIDIA and Wayland users, providing better support for games like GTA: San Andreas, Prince of Persia (2008), The Sims 2, 4, God of War etc.:
