in academia there is a common phrase for old(er) colleagues at the end of their career who lose their commitment to their university jobs: 'retiring in post'
I'd say that's pretty much what we are seeing here, with the proviso that for these MPs, its more keeping a nice sinecure while their exit strategy is firmed up!
