Merchant mariners as a tribe are generally an unusual lot, with a plethora of social eccentricities.
Standing apart and above the general tribe are the Radio/Electronics officers. Other mariners have always commented that they are an odd lot, and that's saying something considering the source.
Well I met one last night, and while a fine mariner, and fellow amateur radio operator, he is know by the crew as "monocle man" because he wears one, and that just so fits a "sparks."
