I'm a little bit older than your son (I was old enough to not like a bunch of what happened after 9-11), but I had a very similar experience.
In middle school, my classmates and I used to joke that since every year History class would start with the discovery and settlement of North America and the schoolyear finish just before the Civil War, none of us knew anything that happened after 1812.
