At first, I thought it was a lesser known Python package, pyscreeze, that had a hard dependency on gnome-screenshot for screenshots on Wayland but no, this behavior is implemented in the widely popular Pillow package.
gnome-screenshot doesn't work on Plasma, + it has other quirks like a forced flash effect.
I have a patch ready for pyscreeze to add support for Plasma with Spectacle and Gamescope with gamescope-dbus but I might as well open an issue on the Pillow tracker to ask what's up.
