I'm not going to minimize the traumatic experience of seeing 9/11 on TV, or the people who lost loved ones that day.
When it comes to remembering though, let's remember the response that happened in this country. The Department of Homeland Security was started. As part of that, ICE was created. It passed the Senate 90-9.
There was an immediate bipartisan response to give the government increased surveillance powers in the PATRIOT act, which includes indefinite detention without trial. Even though it was written to sunset at the end of 2005 it was extended multiple times including by Obama, and only expired in 2020.
The war in Iraq was started with false intelligence reports, by Cheney and Bush lying to Congress and the voters. It's estimated that the war caused 150k to nearly 600k violent deaths, up to a million excess deaths in total. Numbers were consistently underreported, and many Iraqis were simply disappeared to secret prisons. Cheney is now celebrated for supporting Harris. Don't forget.
