Hashtag #mainsplaining
I recently experienced something weird on Facebook (don’t judge): Someone reposted a woman’s account of avoiding paying $150 to have a dealer replace the battery on her car’s remote key fob, by searching for videos on YouTube and doing it herself.
I replied—snarkily—that you know, the user manual that comes with the car tells you how to replace the battery. And almost immediately, accusations of mansplaining and how insensitive I was started coming in. While I thought there’s a difference between snark and mansplaining (I snark irrespective of gender), I edited my post to apologize for the perceived mansplaining, but left it up.
Almost as quickly, (accounts that appeared to be) women posted *in my defense* saying that no, that’s snark, not mansplaining, and I was left watching a short thread form which seemed to be two women arguing against each other about whether I was mansplaining or not.
That was one of the most bizarre experiences I’ve had online.
