I've just replaced a second swollen battery in my Dell XPS from 2015 with another iFixit replacement, cleaned up the fans, and it feels like new.
It's almost unbelievable that I've managed to keep this laptop for 8 years as my main driver, and that it still runs the same Arch installation I installed in 2015.
Had somebody told me 20 years ago "you know, you'll buy a laptop in 2015, you won't need anything else for at least a decade to come, and you won't even have to ever reinstall the OS", I'd have laughed in their face.
Maybe laptop sales are declining not because people don't use laptops anymore, but because the combination of the regulatory pushes against planned obsolescence, the popularity of solutions like iFixit to extend the life of a device, and the technological plateau reached by the industry just means that people don't have to change a laptop every couple of years anymore. And that's a good thing.
