I've always kept them in the bin with the compost, and it seems there are always plenty of them wriggling around whenever I turn the compost, whatever the time of year (though they seem to me most numerous in the springtime).
We're in zone 6-7. It gets cold enough here so that we have snow usually at least once per winter, but most days are above freezing.
