teaser: taking responsibility
Dear Friends,
I'm in the process of writing a piece on Part II Section 34 of the Platform Sutra. It pertains to a famous story about Emperor Wu and Bodhidharma. A magistrate doesn't understand the story, so he asks Hui-Neng what it's all about. Following is the magistrate's question and he recounts the story in said question. I invite you to consider what it means. By consider, I mean carry the story around as a question. Let the story permeate your life, wonder about it, and don't just settle on the first thing that comes to mind. See the story and its meaning in your life. Feel free to discuss it in replies amongst yourselves. I'll be posting my worthless take on it in short order. Haha!
The Magistrate asked, "Your disciple has heard that when Bodhidharma taught Emperor Wu of Liang, the emperor asked Bodhidharma, 'All my life I have built monasteries and made offerings and given alms, but is there any merit in this?' Bodhidharma answered, 'No merit at all.' And the emperor was so upset, he expelled Bodhidharma from his kingdom. I've never understood this and hope the Master will explain it."
