We can eliminate spam by making it expensive, and this can be achieved in two ways:
1. Through returnable micropayments, so the cost of sending mass amounts of messages will be expensive only for a spammer, who violates platform policy. This method is known as proof-of-stake.
2. Through additional computation necessary to send a message. This can be message encryption, so the time necessary to encrypt thousands or millions of spam messages will turn into months or years. The encryption process stands for proof-of-work, which is cheap for a single message, but expensive for bulk.
The fix that #Bitcoin brings to Money also carries a solution to clean up our mailboxes and social media platforms. Technologies underpinning Bitcoin are rooted in attempts to eliminate spam, so the battle against online junk is not yet lost.
