These underground cities are carved from soft volcanic stone and many are connected with each other by narrow tunnels.

There are more than 36 underground cities in the Cappadocia, Turkey region. The Underground Cities of Kaymakli and Derinkuyu are the most popular and most visited ones.

The largest, Derinkuyu, dates back to the 8th century B.C. As an example, Derinkuyu was rediscovered and stumbled upon completely by chance, by a local inhabitant while renovating his house in 1963.

It is believed that the underground city was originally built as a shelter by early Christian communities to help protect from invasions and raids. And eventually, since they were not to be seen from above, for the later Christian community to escape from the pressure and persecution of the Roman Empire and Muslim-Arabs, particularly between 780 and 1180 B.C.
