Hard, yes, but there are actually efforts going on for decades now to bring this magic to a programming environment near you. Linux kernel has been doing it for decades now, and it's starting to make its way to userspace support.
Unfortunately, it really does require hardware support.
Fortunately this support dates back to the 70s.
